Causes of Postnatal Depression
The causes of PND are varied and often there can be a number of factors at play. These can include:
- Traumatic birth (especially when it doesn’t go as you planned)
- Major life change (used to work etc. and being in control)
- The difference between your expectations of parenthood and the reality (rose tinted glasses)
- Pressure to be a ‘super mum’ (often enhanced by the media)
- A lack of support
- Poor relationship with mother / father which can be highlighted when you become a parent
- Giving birth can trigger unresolved issues from the past such as a bereavement, family conflict or the mourning of a miscarriage or still born child
- Poorly child
- Feeling isolated
- Financial worries
- Difficult work situation
